Skippy Says: Austin, Texas (Vacation Recap)

Honeys, I'm home! While my Austin vacation was wonderful, I've really missed you guys! My heart did a little pitter-patter went I hit "compose" just now. Before I launch into a recap, I once again want to thank Lisa, Audrey, Chic 'n Cheap Living, Jewish Girl, and Kileen for guest posting while I was away. Weren't they awesome?

I was kind of a bad blogger in Austin. I didn't take too many photos, though I do have a few to share. While Austin ended up being a really cool city (and I'm happy to finally understand now what my friend means when she says it's both a big city and a little village all at once), the primary purpose of the trip was not to see Austin. It was to visit my friend, and to spend hours girl talking and cuddling in bed with her. Mission accomplished. No worries, we took turns being "big spoon" and "little spoon" so no feelings were hurt on either end. It's all about compromise folks.

Since it'd be too overwhelming to share everything we did, I've picked three of my favorites to share with you:

1. Whole Foods

Did you know that the flagship Whole Foods store is in Austin? I.was.in.heaven. They have everything. Everything. You want something? Don't worry, they have it. Bulk bins as far as the eye can see, clothes, make-up, and prepared foods galore. Among the goodies I brought back with me were farro, nutritional yeast, and an unbelievably delicious vegan cheese dip. What, those aren't normal souvenirs?

Don't you think I walked out of the dessert section without some goodies. Some of the best toffee I've ever had + a lavender truffle. Nummers.

2. Tango: shoes + milonga

My friend dances tango, and on my last day in Austin she took me to go look at some tango shoes being sold by a tango instructor in Austin named Laura. Ladies, you need to start looking at tango shoes. And buying some. Whether you decide to tango in them or not is your call, but they are just too beautiful not to own and wear as regular shoes. Plus, they make them in a size 4! Yes, I have midget feet. Never have I ever tried on a pair of shoes that fits me that well, that is so beautiful, and that is so freaking comfortable. You can bet I'll be investing in some real soon. If you're interested, here's where you can buy the ones I looked at below.

Later that night, I got to watch my friend dance for a few hours at a milonga. I promptly texted Ryan to inform him we'd be starting tango lessons upon my return.

3. Lick Ice Cream

Sweet corn ice cream. Goat cheese, thyme, and honey ice cream. Butternut squash ice cream. And so many more. I literally asked for at least 15 samples before finally making a decision. I have no shame.

This right here is what it's all about.

  1. Thank you for introducing me to not one but two things - Whole Foods (I always wondered what the fuss was about - now I know!) and tango shoes. I thought tango shoes would have a dancer's heel that wasn't pretty enough to wear on other occasions, but I was dead wrong. These are fantastic! Happy to hear you enjoyed your trip :)

  44. Love Whole Foods, who doesn't? LOVE LOVE LOVE some of those tango shoes. I would have never have thought about them before. Lets talk about the ice cream- weird!?!?!? Was it good? I am glad you had a great time and sometimes getting away just to be in bed instead of being all blogged out is better for the soul. Not better for us since your gone but you picked great guest to post.
    Cheers,
    Bre

  46. Hey, welcome back! :)
Sounds like you have a really really wonderful friend, and had a great time!

Love the foodstore, I'd spend hours there! I'm known to spend way to much time in totally regular foodstores whenever I visit another place. I mean, there are different chocolate brands in different countries, and cheeses... And the bread looks different. You know what I mean. :)

    The shoes are gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Aw, thanks Bre! I'm glad you enjoyed the guest posts, and I'm so happy to be back now :) The ice cream was delicious- I promise! And they did have regular normal flavors too...And aren't the tang shoes awesome?!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Those are my favorites too!! They were sadly too big on me :( But if you wear a size 5 they'll be great on you! And I sure did :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thanks!! I sure do, and I sure did :)

I definitely know what you mean. Weirdly enough, I LOVE grocery shopping, going down each aisle, seeing all the offerings. I mean, I love food, so I guess it makes sense...

And yes they are, aren't they!?

  50. Looks like the trip was a ton of fun. I love all the shoes!

  51. Just last night, I posted a blog about my trip to Austin (including) Whole Foods. Then I got a comment and followed it and a few minutes later landed at your blog and this post about Whole Foods in Austin. The Interwebs never ceases to amaze me!

  52. How random! Love it though :) Wonder if we were there at the same time maybe?

  53. I would have been at Whole Foods on Monday, November 7 right at noon. Any chance you were there then? So, how blown away were you by their salad bar? Or their chocolate fountain? Or their in-house taqueria? I would never cook at home if I lived close to that Whole Foods!

Please do stop by my bloggy to say hello. I'm at Clothes Karma

    ReplyDelete
  54. Aw, no, but I was there the day before! And the day before that, and before that :) I was totally blown away. Heading over to check out your blog now :)
