Skippy Says: My Babushka (OOTD)

I was lucky enough to have all four of my grandparents alive until I was almost 20 years old. Unfortunately, three passed away in a very short time span thereafter (all within 1.5 years), but I still have one grandma remaining. She lives in Germany, but I always call her for our weekly chat. And every week without fail, we have the same conversation. Since she's pretty old school, she asks if I'm doing my job of cooking and cleaning the house well. I lie, and she proceeds to praise me. She tells me about all her friends she showed my wedding photos too, asking them if I'm not the prettiest bride there ever lived? They lie, and she proceeds to praise them. The conversation ends with her asking me if Ryan is still tall. Ryan's almost 6''2 and at the ripe old age of 26 nowhere near shrinking age yet, but I think my grandma is terrified I'll have short children. Being barely 5'1 myself (in the morning on a good day when I stand up really straight), I'm not offended at all. Really.

My grandma is the kindest person you'll ever meet. Whether it's for people or animals, the amount of love she has in that little body of hers never ceases to amaze me. When she flew out for my wedding last year, she spent hours massaging my dog with her arthritic hands every day. I bet she would have loved this dog that randomly wandered into our photo shoot.

  2. The outfit is cute and colourful. I love your lipstick pairing. It's bold and feminine. Looking at the area you took your photoshoot in reminds me of Hawaii. I think that's indicative of my needing to see some sun and my imagination going wild seeing as how I have no idea where the photos were taken. ;) I love hearing the stories about peoples families and seeing how they tie into the photos. xoxo

  4. You are adorable and so are your weekly convo's with your grandmother. How cute. My paternal grandparents are still alive and I am extremely close to my grandmother as well. I'm lucky to live right next door to her.. so it's awesome to see her everday. She's 87 and still going strong. That woman can not keep still. She keeps going and going. :)

    xx Love & aloha

  5. aw your Grandma sounds great :)

That's hysterical that she asks if your hubby is still tall!! Why is that tall guys always go for the short girls? I'm only 5 foot and half an inch, (hey that 1/2 inch counts!!) and every guy that I date is over 6'.

  6. I love this post ~ I used to talk to my grandma (or rather, Vecmaminia as we are Latvian) every week as well, and she always had the most amusing things to say. Grandmothers are so special that way!

And on a side note, I call our puppy Babushka sometimes... i have no idea why, other than I think it's an endearing title :)

  7. What a sweet story about your grandma :) Love your top and skirt!

  8. LOVE that top! Such pretty colors.

Your story made me a little sad - I have lost all of my grandparents, and I remember having conversations like that with my grandma. She would ask the same questions, and I remember getting annoyed at it, but now I would give anything to have her ask me one last time :(

Funny that she lives in Germany - that's actually where my sister lives too! So I call Germany every day. I hate that she's so far away!! Do you ever go visit?

  9. Enjoy spending time and talking to your grandmother. I've lost all of my grandparents, but I have treasured memories of each one of them. Pretty outfit Skippy! I love the colors. You look great in them. Have a wonderful weekend. ((HUG))

  10. Oooh, wearing this top with a royal blue bottom is a revelation---thanks for the inspiration!

  11. I'm glad I read this...I'm sort of in this stage with my own grandmother, who is prone to repeating things and asking the same questions over and over. I need to remind myself to be patient and grateful for the time we still have together!

  12. Aw, thank you so very much for your sweet words Rachel! The photos were taken in Mill Valley, a little town just north of San Francisco where my in-laws live

  13. Thanks! Don't be jealous- I gotta fight the frizz battle every day :)

  14. Aw, that's absolutely wonderful!! My grandma is 83 and going pretty strong too :)

  15. She is :) That was same with me! I don't know why...maybe they like feeling like they can be the big protective man? And I certainly like feeling protected :)

  16. Thanks Cara! That's so cute that you call your pup babushka! I call mine monkey- I think I'm giving him an identity crisis :)

  17. I'm sorry to hear that Megan :( I definitely look back at how I got annoyed with my other 3 grandparents when they would ask me the same questions over and over, take a long time to do things, etc, and I want to kick myself. But, now when I find myself getting annoyed with my only remaining grandma, I try to remind myself of that, and suddenly I'm less annoyed. Same goes for my parents.

My whole dad's side of the family immigrated to Germany when we (and my mom's side of the family) immigrated to America int he early 90's. They live in a little town called Osnabruck, and yes, I visit often. I used to go basically every summer for like 6 weeks in middle and high school. Where is your sister? And have you visited?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I hear ya. Like I said to Megan above, I remember being impatient with my other grandparents, and now it makes me so sad, so it's a good reminder when I feel myself start to get annoyed with my grandma now.

  19. Anytime :) Glad you liked it! I'm thinking of maybe trying it with gray bottoms (either pants or a pencil skirt) next :)

  20. Really love that story about Babushka and your weekly chat. It's sweet and reminds me of my grandma too. She would ask the same questions over and over. I really miss her!

And in love with this gorgeous outfit! I can't get enough of your color mixing.

  24. Looks like you're still enjoying nice weather in SF. We all tell little lies to our grandparents, don't we? I ordered a standard-issue birthday card from our Prime Minister's office to be sent to my grandma on her birthday. She thinks the Prime Minister personally sent it (her reasoning? Because she has the same maiden name as our town mayor). We didn't correct her. She later sent the PM a long and detailed thank you note.

  25. Aww, I love this. Love your outfit, too...wow, is it really that warm in SF still?! Crazy!

  26. :) Thanks for the encouragement on my blog! Someday...

Just stopped by and this is lovely. I totally feel you on the 5'1" on a good day... I'm just shy of 5' and the boy is 6'. My grandma also feels the need to comment and silently wish for tall grandchildren! But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Excited to keep snooping around your blog!

  28. I had a really similar situation with my grandparents. Now my only grandma lives in South Africa and every time I speak to her I tell her I'm 22, and she doesn't believe me. I find it difficult to repeat these conversations over and over. Whenever I saw her she used to massage our backs even though she's so frail!

You look beautiful in this outfit, it's so colourful!

  37. Gosh - you're 5'1 and grandma thinks you're short already. Imagine when she see me, I'm under 5 BUT for some reason my kids are growing really tall and my husband is only 5'4. I'm wondering where they got it from ;) Love this outfit on you - the blue skirt paired with red flowered top is gorgeous. I am so jealous that you live in CA and have such nice weather during this time. Have a great weekend dear.

  50. Your grandmother sounds like an absolute sweetheart! Grandparents are amazing. I'm fortunate that I still have my grandma and grandpa around. They're truly lovely people. My grandmother always smells like freshly baked cookies, and my grandpa likes to speak German to me... which I neither understand nor speak. So I just sort of nod and say, "Ya... Ya... Mein hut (which is the only German phrase/word I actually know)... Nein..."

This outfit is SO cute! I swear by Anthro's sale racks. I bought several things recently when they were having an extra 20% off clearance items. My bank account wept that day.

  51. She sure is :) It's funny how grandparents do that- my Russian grandma always talks to Ryan in Russian too (when she visits here or we visit there) and he has no idea what she's saying so he just nods and smiles :)

And thank you! Anthro sale racks are where its at :)
